I don't know much about migrant workers, except from what I read in The Beet Fields. But I know it is hard, hard life. The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child was excellent and eye-opening. And after watching the Republican Debate from Greenville, SC last weekend, it really makes me wonder if any one of those individuals knows anything about what it is like to be a migrant worker. And I think about how important it is to be educated (I don't mean formally here, I just mean non-ignorant, like these men are). And I think about how important books are and the places they take you and the understanding that can come from reading.
These are short, important stories from the life of Francisco Jiménez and I would recommend this to all.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
