The Gift of Being Yourself: the Sacred Call to Self-Discovery by David G. Benner was our Sunday School class's fall semester book and so I have been reading it and listening to it and talking about it (though I did miss a lot of classes this fall- gonna do better this winter!) since September.
It a really good, short but challenging book and I have recommended it to others. I love how honest the author is, saying that "knowing yourself" can sound like psychobabble. He even references the cartoon I have posted here. And so with honesty, the book begins. And it goes into some very helpful and important places. And the thing is, there IS a sacred call to know oneself. It's just hard to do.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
