wasn't that a great, great song...
Listen, Slowly was also a great, great book. I had really enjoyed Lai's Inside Out and Back Again and I was very excited to listen to this one. Mai has just finished sixth grade and can't wait to spend her summer at Laguna Beach like all summers before, especially this summer because of HIM! Her family has other plans for her, however. Mai's grandmother is going back to her native Vietnam to find out what happened to her husband during the war and they want Mai to go with her.
Mai seemed a bit spoiled to me...but then I remembered that she is only a sixth grader and then I thought, "dude, Mai's parents are nuts, this is too much for a kid to have to handle!" And now I just think I was overreacting.
A beautiful story about learning about one's roots.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
