When I read the reviews for Into White I was worried about reading the book. There were some people who really slammed this book and said it was racist and it the characters were all race-focused and on and on and on. But the thing was, the folks who said that were all white. And frankly, it is pretty easy for someone who is white to say that "race should be a big deal." White people are always ready to say that racism is the past, that Affirmative Action isn't necessary. White people are just that-- what's the world? Ignorant? Clueless?
Racist.
That's probably the best word, even if it is painful.
An excellent book. Convicting. Excellent.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
