Sharon Creech is fast becoming a favorite author of mine. She's really making me appreciate poetry-like, free verse, blank verse books. Heartbeat is a pleasant, thoughtful story of a Annie, tween girl who loves to run- not for a team or anything, even though her school's track coach pressures her to do so. She runs barefoot in the woods, sometimes with Max, a classmate who does run for the school's track team. Their relationship is one story line in Heartbeat. The other is Annie's mom's pregnancy. Another is the declining health of Annie's grandfather.
Running through the background of the whole story is an art assignment in which Annie has to draw the same apple every day for one hundred days. How this all fits together is pure literary genius.
What a lovely book.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
