What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

When I was ten years old...

A delightfully macabre book by Alvin Schwartz came on the scene, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. It is a collection of dark urban legends and spooky folks tales, illustrated by Stephen Gammell. Oh how I loved that book! Two more books followed: More Scary Stories and Scary Stories 3, each with eerie illustrations from Gammell and expertly retold stories by Schwartz.
I am so pleased to see that these books are still loved by kids today and instantly recognizable to them by the cover illustrations.
I read they are to be re released with new illustrations by the Bret Helquist guy who illustrated The Series of Unfortunate Events. This makes me sad! But I'll reserve judgment!
I was excited to see the whole three book series on cd and just finished listening to it.
The guy who reads them does a super job. My favorite story is The Curse, but all of the great ones are here. The Hook, Sam's Pet, etc.  It's a great collection if you have to learn a scary story to tell or if you just want to scare yourself.

  1. Oh man! The story about spiders and Sam's Pet used to freak me out so much! I used to love that book, and the illustrations were perfectly disturbing.
