What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

Take Me Like a Vacation

Man...I really thought that was a dumb song, even though I love Janie Fricke.    It was on her Black and White album, which, again, I loved.  At first, when I was thinking about the song, I thought it was by K.T. Oslin.  Turns out, it was Lynn Anderson who had the hit with it.  I don't know much about her, just Rose Garden, of course.
The Vacation is something else that I really loved a lot.  This year I discovered the amazing Polly Horvath.  I picked up this cd just because I loved all of the books I've read by her so far. Man.  She is just so good!
Now some might argue that are books are the kind of books where the characters just don't do anything.  And I guess they don't really do anything, but man while they aren't doing anything, you can't stop reading about them!  They are such interesting characters!
Twelve year old Henry and his aunts don't do anything in this book but drive around a bunch of southern and western states.  Henry's mom has decided to go to Africa and become a missionary, even though she's not a religious person.  Henry's dad has gone with her, too, leaving Henry with his two unmarried aunts, Mag and Pig.  Mag and Pig get bored watching Henry at his house and decide to just drive all over the place.  Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas.
The writing is wonderful and the characters are hilarious and I hope that Horvath revisits them.  I love her writing and I loved this book!
