Walter Dean Myers has a section at the end of his book titled "Why Another Carmen?" in which he addresses why he chose to do a hip-hop, modern version of Bizet's opera. I liked what he had to say, but personally I am good with whatever Myers wants to do. I love Myers.
What I meant by another Carmen was that, if you remember, gentle reader, not so long ago I read The Fortune of Carmen Navarro which was also a Carmen. Critics panned it, but I loved it. But that's okay by me!
I really enjoyed WDM's Carmen as well. While Fortune is a regular ole book, WDM's Carmen is written just like an opera, a libretto and music and all. The back of the book says that you can go to a couple websites and hear the music, one of the Myer's website, but I couldn't find it on the site, but I didn't look too hard yet, but I will go back!
I think it is too hard to compare Forture and WDM's Carmen because they are so different but I did enjoy Fortune better. Still, WDM's Carmen is a great read and I would love to see it on the stage some day. Mr. Myers is a man of many, many talents.
Best line from Carmen: If you don't love me, I love you, If I love you, keep guard of yourself!
