My friend Rachel and I used to ask each other that all the time. Most of the time we really weren't mocking each other. When Miss Kelly told me about The Mockingbirds, one of the books she read for The Amelia Bloomer Project, I kept thinking that the title was Mockingjay, which is another great book, but a totally different kind of book, but they both do have strong female characters. The Mockingbirds take their name from To Kill a Mockingbird and its quest for truth and justice for those who don't really have a great shot at getting it. They are a group of students at Themis Academy who hear, investigate and try cases brought to them by other students. Alex has been date-raped and is encouraged by her friend and her older sister to take her case to the group.
The author, Daisy Whitney was date-raped during her first semester at Brown. Her passion for empowering girls and women is clear throughout Mockingbirds. I'm looking forward to the sequel, due out next month.
