What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

Both Dated and Not Dated

I do love Beverly Cleary, but I had never read Otis Spofford until now.  It was an ebook checkout from the library.  It was funny and great and I do think that kids could still like it today, even though it was written in 1953, but there are SO many things that are offensive about it!  Dude!  Experimenting on animals in the classroom!  Killing insects for a school report!  Totally ridiculous comments and stereotypes about Native Americans.  Like unreal!
So I don't know how I could recommend this book to a kid.  What to do about books like that?  I just couldn't get past the Native American stereotypes.  That was harsh.  Harsh.  So yeah...I enjoyed it, but it was unsettling.
