Too Many Murphys was a very popular book back in the day. I never read it, but maybe I will someday! Regardless, A Savage Thunder: Antietam and the Bloody Road to Freedom is not by TMM's author, Colleen O'Shaughnessy McKenna, it is by Jim Murphy. He really has a way of making history come alive. I love his stuff! I must confess that I am not much of a battle history fan. And that is what this is, well a lot of it. But the way that Murphy writes makes it all so interesting.
One of the things that again still surprises me, even though it shouldn't, it the war was not about the freedom of slaves. The people of the north were just as racist as the people of the south. And I wish that I knew more about Lincoln, because I don't know if he was truly an emancipator or not, in his heart, I mean. I have been told that I should watch the movie and I need do that.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
