I haven't been to a lot of places, but Portland is, hands-down the most unfriendly city I have visited, ever. There seems to be a complete disregard for humans. Homeless folks line the streets but every tree has a "PROTECTED" sign on it. You can't look anywhere without seeing human suffering right next to "GO GREEN" propaganda.
At the conference I've talked to folks from wonderful, people-loving, liberal Madison, Wisconsin who have told me that they feel the same way I do.
I know when I get out of here I will return to my left-leaning ways, but while I am here I feel like a fish out of water.
You always hear that New Yorkers are unfriendly, or that folks in Chicago are cold. NO WAY! I enjoy both of those cities and believe me-- the people of Portland could make a New Yorker cry in ten seconds.
The conference itself has been good. So far I have learned some good stuff that I will try to implement back home, but Portland? Ugh. It leaves me as cold as the people I've met.
Now to be fair, I recently discovered that Business Week ranked it as the U.S.'s most depressed city so maybe that is why everyone is so indifferent. Maybe once I am away from here I will soften my heart to Portland, for now I am ranting.
