What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

Huston...Huston means that I'm one day closer to you...

That was great song.  And man...isn't Larry Gatlin a hottie?
Huston's Haunted Hollow, however...not so much in the way of greatness.
It wasn't the port-o-johns, though by now you know how I feel about them.
It wasn't the fact that they were out of Walking Tacos.
I think it was that it was just too long.
Not that it was long...it wasn't.
But...
There were three parts:
First a really decent haunted house, in a creepy building with great actors.  That would have been enough.  Stop it right there and you have a good experience.
Second we got on a tractor and were tormented by clowns.  I actually thought the clowns were cool, so that was good.  It was a beautiful night for a hayride, so that part was good, too.  As we drove into the woods, we listened to a recording tell of the legend of the Haunted Hollow.  That was excellent!  The story was good and it was fairly creepy.  The voice of the man telling it was professional and it was very enjoyable.
But then it kinda went down hill a little.  Not too much at first.  The gal who led us into the woods after the tractor dropped us off was very friendly.  Even though she was a demon, she was excited to learn that we were from Pittsburgh and shared that she was from Dormont and worked for CVS.  I know that was out of character, but I do like small world stories, so I thought it was cool, but not scary.
The woods were creepy and fires were lit on both sides.  But the thing is...budget cuts must have meant that only one dude was in the whole trail to scare us!  I mean, I seriously think the same dude with a chainsaw had to run around and scare us at different places in the woods!   So needless to say, the woodland trail was short on scares.
We got back on the tractor and were taken to a corn field.  Both the tractor driver and the girl in the corn field were not into the scene at all.  I felt like we were bothering them!  You could almost see them rolling their eyes!  I know it is late in the season...but come on!
The corn maze was not really a maze but a walk through and I swear, the same dude from the woods had to chase us around again.
It was pretty sad.
We did have nachos though, so that was good.
I wonder if it wouldn't have seemed so bad had we gone to their first.  The Hayloft was a hard act to follow.

  1. On the eve of Halloween we closed the 2010 season at Huston’s Haunted hollow. Personally I think Huston’s closed a few weeks ago as they lack of actors was horrendous.

This attraction had two parts, a haunted house and a haunted hayride/walking trail. The haunted house wasn’t bad, I am really enjoying the 3-d effects that everyone is doing in their houses but those damn glasses are so hard to keep on. We wore our glasses through most of this house. There were some decent effects but the scares were not scary at all and the most activity I saw from any of the actors was the clowns harassing us while we sat on the tractor waiting for the hayride to begin.

Huston’s at this point should have stopped because the hayride was very lame, I am sorry but they did nothing to scare you or make the hayride scary other than playing a story. This part of the attraction involved us sitting in hay going for a short ride to a walking trail. As we walked the trail there was one person that attempted to scare us and that was it. I think we were more scared of the firepots getting knocked over then being scared. We boarded the tractor again for another short ride in which we then were dropped off at a path through some cornstalks. This time two actors worked the path and attempted to scare everyone with chainsaws. The two actors focused on the people in front of us and I think either didn’t care we were behind them or truthfully didn’t know there was more people coming because when they did turn around they never tried scaring us at all.

This attraction should have stopped with the haunted house, if you can’t fully staff the hayride/walking trail then why bother with it. Charge a few dollars less and just focus on the house. Not how we had hoped to close the 2010 season.

They were out of walking tacos, but the hot dogs and nachos were tasty. I give this attraction 4 skulls for scariness and 3 pumpkins for atmosphere
