Cloaked in Red has a bad cover. Wait. That's not right. It is an interesting cover. But it really is misleading. It has a very SERIOUS cover, I think. I picked it up and put it down at least three times before I read it and I wish I hadn't waited so long. It is great fun! I wish I would have remember that Vivian Vande Velde wrote All Hallows' Eve, which I loved very much. I would have definitely have read it, even with a too-serious cover. Vande Velde starts out by critiquing the story of Little Red Riding Hood as a short story. Funny and oh so true are her comments. Then she follows with eight creative and wonderful takes on the fairy tale. I especially loved the one about the near-sighted woodsman. Poor Ginerbread Boy.
I recommended this to my friend who has a seven year old daughter who is wicked-smart, with a great sense of humor. It is perfect for reading aloud at bedtime for this particular little girl. Fabulous.
