Cloaked in Red has a bad cover. Wait. That's not right. It is an interesting cover. But it really is misleading. It has a very SERIOUS cover, I think. I picked it up and put it down at least three times before I read it and I wish I hadn't waited so long. It is great fun! I wish I would have remember that Vivian Vande Velde wrote All Hallows' Eve, which I loved very much. I would have definitely have read it, even with a too-serious cover.
Vande Velde starts out by critiquing the story of Little Red Riding Hood as a short story. Funny and oh so true are her comments. Then she follows with eight creative and wonderful takes on the fairy tale. I especially loved the one about the near-sighted woodsman. Poor Ginerbread Boy.
I recommended this to my friend who has a seven year old daughter who is wicked-smart, with a great sense of humor. It is perfect for reading aloud at bedtime for this particular little girl. Fabulous.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
