What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

We Ain't Got No Hard Times At All

Country music has never been known for it's grammar, but Hard Times is one of the best songs I've ever heard.  After listen to The Worst Hard Time, I am yet again reminded that I ain't got no hard times, indeed.  In keeping with my plan to listen to books that coincide with my travels I chose this nonfiction work about the Dust Bowl.  I admit the most I knew about the "Dirty Thirties" as they were called was what I learned in school and the excellent HBO series Carnivale.  As I drove from Goodlettsville, through Arkansas, Texas and out to Albuquerque, NM, I learned a great deal in this well done book that reads like fiction.  If you're like me, that's a good thing.  It wasn't as gripping as The Devil in the White City, but it was really worth listening to, especially while crossing the Texas panhandle and seeing the land to which the author refers.  It is a long book, and it gets a little repetitive in places, but it's worth it.
