Now we move on to Second Life. If you're like me, you're next question is, "Is that even still around?" Apparently it is, though more people, lots more people play Bridge. Bridge used to be quite a life-threatening game, actually. Check out this article from the Sports Illustrated Vault. Which is more evil? Contract Bridge or Second Life?
As I read Turkle's thoughts on Second Life, after I got over the shock that anyone still was on it, I was reminded of the panic that surrounded Dungeons and Dragons in the 80s. People are escaping into the world of Second Life. People are having online affairs with avatars! They aren't. But this half of Alone Together is making me wonder if, in twenty years, I'll find Alone Together at the thrift store and laugh about it like I found this book, twenty years after its publication.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
