What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

What a Strange World

We live in a world that has a lot of vile ugliness in it. Yet in that same world there exists a lot of incredible beauty. If You Come Softly is book that contains both. The book itself is incredibly beautiful, written by the amazing Jacqueline Woodson. As you know she was robbed of the not-so prestigious Newbery Award in 2009. I find it incomprehensible that If You Come Softly was not at least an Honor Book in 2008. What won that year? Ah yes....Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village. Yeah. Kids LOVE this book. Oh man. Okay. Moving on.
If You Come Softly is the story of Ellie and Jeremiah. A story of the incredible beauty that is there love. It is also the story of vile ugliness. Prejudice, especially from Ellie's ridiculous, buffoon of a sister, Anne, who belongs to among the lowest of the low- the ranking of the revolting hypocrite. Ellie is Jewish and Jeremiah is African American. They are in love, something that repulsive frauds such as Anne can't seem to understand.
This story is beautiful but it reminds us of the evil and the depravity that exists in this world. I pray that Ellie and Jeremiah will be together, always. And I pray for the day that all will celebrate their love.
