Susan Campbell Bartoletti has won the
Carolyn W. Field Award four times. Her winning books are:
Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow,
Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, 1845-1850,
Growing Up in Coal Country, and the book I just finished
The Boy Who Dared. When she won for
Hitler Youth, I was at the ceremony and got to hear her talk about it and the fictional
The Boy Who Dared.
The Boy Who Dared is based on the true story of
Helmuth Hubener, who is also talked about in
Hitler Youth. A great, great book. It is a tremendous story of faith and bravery in the face of extreme evil.
