What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

Rethinking Beverly Cleary

A few weeks ago someone tagged me in a Facebook note called 15 Authors.  I'll post that, too, but one of my authors was Beverly Cleary.  I simply love the Ramona stories.  But this year was a rough one for me and Bev.  I had such a terrible time in her hometown of Portland, OR, which doesn't even deserve a link.
Now I have just finished The Mouse and the Motorcycle.  I listened to it on CD and was delighted with the reader, who is B.D. Wong from Law & Order: SVU, which is my favorite currently-running television show.  Still, even B.D. Wong couldn't' make up for this pretty boring story about a mouse who should be the pet of Margaret from AYTGIMM.  He is so rotten and obnoxious and truly selfish for most of the book.  True, he does redeem himself when he has the opportunity to help out the little boy who provides him with a motorcycle, but his attitude is just so rotten that it is hard to come around to liking him even when he has a change of heart.
Maybe I need to go back and read a Ramona story so that I can fall in love with Clearly all over again.  Oh yeah, and never visit Portland again.  That will help everything.
