What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

New Orleans

So in June, God willing, I will be going to New Orleans for the ALA Annual Conference.  I am so excited!  I've only been to one annual conference and it was amazing!  I can't wait to go again.  There is so much to learn and so much to see.  Plus, I have never been to New Orleans before, and I know it is going to be very hot, but I don't care!  Remember, I have that thing for New Orleans.
I was excited to have my friend Karen recommend Ruined to me.  First I loved the title.  So bleak, right?  And set in New Orleans.
Rebecca is a New York City girl.  She and her dad live in Manhattan (her mother died when Rebecca was a little girl) and lead pretty normal lives.  When her father has to go to China for six months, Rebecca is sent to live with her aunt (not her real aunt, but a friend of the family kinda aunt) in the Garden District of New Orleans.
She finds out right away that New Orleans is nothing like NYC.  There's a whole new code of snobbery, where it matters who your great-great-great grandparents were, if you want to be "cool."
She also finds out that there ARE such things as ghosts, as she befriends Lisette, who has been dead for more than 150 years.  Ruined is a great ghost story with a great setting a tiny bit of romance.  There was one part that I did find to be a little weird and maybe I can describe it without giving too much away.  When Rebecca and her aunt discover that there is a curse on one of the girls, they are content to just let it ride, let the girl die.  This bugged me.  I am just not really sure how many people would feel that way?
It was kind of weird.  I hope that someone else I know will read it too, so that I can see if this is just something I am not understanding correctly, or if they feel the same way.

  1. Oh man, I'm jealous that you get to go to New Orleans. I love that city. I haven't been back since Katrina so I can only imagine how's it's changed but it's really an awesome place. You should check out the various ghost/vampire/graveyard tours they do. I went on an awesome ghost tour that took us to all these old houses and buildings that were supposed to be haunted. At each site the tour guide (who was rather spooky by himself) would stop and tell these awesome stories of eyewitness accounts. Crazy fun! Also, I don't know if you're read any Poppy Z. Brite but she's written a lot of good horror stories set in New Orleans. I hope you have an awesome trip!
