Everyone defines broad terms like "fantastic" differently. The Fantastic Secret of Owen Jester might be someone's idea of "fantastic"- the secret, that is. But I don't know if it my idea of "fantastic," that's all. I don't really know even how much of a "secret" it is. The secret is a submarine and well, I don't think I am spoiling anything by revealing that, because there's a big ole picture of the submarine right on the front of the book. The other thing is, Owen tells a few people about the secret, and leaves the submarine exposed so that it could be even less of a secret. Maybe it is just that the title is confusing. Owen is a nice guy. He lives with his parents and his sick grandfather and his grandfather's care taker who is cranky a lot. It's summer time and at night Owen can here the train rumble on down the tracks. One night he hears something fall off the tracks and the next day he enlists the help of it two best friends to help him find it. They need to do this and keep it a secret from Viola, the nosy girl next door. They also need to figure out what to do with the bullfrog that Owen has caught. He doesn't seem very happy in captivity. I don't know. This was just okay for me. It's a country story. They aren't usually my thing, but Faith, Hope and Ivy June was a country story and I loved that. It's the kind of story that just slowly unfolds, but so was Egypt Game and I loved that. Maybe I just didn't like this one.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
