Meg Medina was given the Pura Belpré Author Award this year for Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass. I am just not sure as to why it wasn't named a Printz Honor now that I have listened to it. This is the story of Piddy Sanchez who is a bright teenager who has just moved to a new school where she is the victim of bullying that gets really, really awful because another girl, Yaqui Delgado, whom Piddy has never even talked to thinks that she is after her boyfriend, another student whom Piddy has never met.
Piddy's story isn't just about being bullied, though, it is also the tale of her self-discovery. This was a great, great read.
What's Going On Here?
There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.
