What's Going On Here?

There are SO MANY wonderful book review blogs out there and I can't compete with them, that is for sure. So this is not a book review blog. This is just a way for me to organize what I have read so that I can be better at matching the right book to the right person. The blog title comes from the brilliant mind of the most talented woman who ever lived, Ms. Judy Garland. The full quote is, "Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of someone else." That is what I hope to do here and in ever aspect of my life.

Holy Haunt!

Last Saturday night I returned for another Great Pumpkin Spooktacular at Fern Hollow Nature Center.  MaryAnne joined me as well.
The crowd was gracious and listened kindly as I sang "There was an old woman all skin and bone" and told the stories of The Viper, Long, Bony Fingers and Red, Ruby Lips and Rapping in the Attic (google searches turned up those random samples, they aren't exactly how I did them) around a beautiful bonfire as they feasted on s'mores.
We left and headed to haunts while the families when on a night walk through the woods and then headed back to the Center to watch The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
First on our list was my second year trip to Sewickley United Methodist Church Haunted House.  Here's an article about it.  I especially like how it addresses the appropriateness of a church having a haunted attraction.  Once again those zany United Methodists did an terrific job!  I jumped several times.  I wouldn't miss this attraction for anything.

Simple, scary and creative.  We experienced things here that we didn't at other places.  No animatronics needed at all.
At the start of the haunt, everyone is given a sticker.  At the end you come upon a bunch of bags - each one marked for one of the rooms in the attraction.  You vote for the best by putting your sticker in the corresponding bag.  I tell you it was seriously hard to decide!  I wish I had a sticker for all of them!
Way to go!

  1. Fern Hollow Nature Center, no this isn’t a haunted house. It is a nature center that puts on a Halloween program for families. The have this big bonfire where the kids can roast marshmallows and make s’mores while Ingrid tells ghost stories!!!!! After the ghost stories they go inside and watch the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown and then hit the nature trail for a spooky hike.

Ingrid did a wonderful job tell spooky stories and Halloween trivia with the families!!!! Kudos to Ingrid!!!!

After Fern Hollow we went on to visit Sewickley United Methodist Church Haunted House. We had visited this house last year and it was well done. This year instead of waiting inside the church we waited for our turn inside activities room. Last year we navigated the haunted house ourselves, but this time they used a guide who talked to us as we went through the different rooms.

Something that you don’t see in many places that I think should be utilized more is having a ringer in the group. This haunted house did use one and when we entered the zombie area the zombies grabbed a girl who was part of her group and dragged her away while she was kicking and screaming. Her mother ran after her screaming her name. This was well done and so unexpected I love it!!!!

This was a great little haunted attraction, well put together and full of scares. Each room was well done and the actors really put their heart into their work. You have to vote at the end on which room did the best job and honestly its too close to call. They all were so great!!!!
